Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday asserted if the Congress is re-elected to power in Chhattisgarh, a caste census will be conducted in the state, similar to the one carried out in Bihar.

"I announce that if Congress repeats government in Chhattisgarh, then like Bihar, we will also hold caste census in the state," Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said at a public event in poll-bound Chhattisgarh's Kanker.

The report of the caste-based survey conducted in Bihar was released on Monday by the Nitish Kumar-led Mahagathbandhan government. The Congress is an ally of the government in Bihar.

Congress General Secretary further said that her family has an old association with Chhattisgarh.

"Only with time, trust is developed. Today, if you have trust in the Congress government in Chhattisgarh, it is because the current government here is taking forward an old tradition of the Congress," Priyanka said.

"My family has an old association with Chhattisgarh. Pt Nehru visited here during the freedom struggle. My grandmother Indira Ji visited Bastar in 1972. My father and mother also visited Bastar many times to understand the problems faced by the people of Chhattisgarh and to hold consultations. This is how trust was built in the Congress party in Chhattisgarh," she added.

Speaking about the impact of various state government schemes in the state, she said that the Congress government here has worked for the public.

"The Congress government here has worked for you (public). 40 lakh people here have been uplifted out of poverty in the last 5 years," she asserted.

Earlier after the 2018 assembly polls, the Congress witnessed a landslide victory winning 68 seats out of 90 of those against the then ruling-BJP, which acquired 15 seats.

Chhattisgarh is among five states that will go to the polls by the end of the year. The Congress government came to power in the state in 2018. (ANI)
