Veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) State President Anathalavattom Anandan passed away at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College on Thursday. He was 86 years old.

He had been hospitalized a few days ago and was under treatment for a prolonged illness, party sources said.

He was born on April 22, 1937, in Anathalavattom in Thiruvananthapuram district.

Anandan was elected to the state assembly three times from Attingal Constituency. He joined the Communist Party in 1956 and stayed with CPI(M) during the split.

In 1985 he was selected to the CPI(M) state committee. In 2008 he became a member of the CPI(M) state secretariat. He was also serving as the CITU vice President.

Anathalavattom was a regular spokesperson for CPI(M) and used to defend the party in prime-time debates. He was under treatment in Chennai and later hospitalized in Trivandrum Medical College a week back. (ANI)
