Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge hit out at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday in poll-bound Chhattisgarh and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi makes false allegations of "corruption" against the state government and does not talk of "jal, jangal and zameen (water, forest, land)".

Addressing a rally here, Kharge said three of four chief ministers of the Congress are from backward communities and party leaders are accessible to people.

"We have four chief ministers and out of them three belong to backward communities. When it comes to you (BJP) the distance is too much that neither Chief Minister nor Cabinet Ministers talk to the backwards...," he said.

Kharge accused the BJP of trying to topple the Congress governments.

"PM Modi comes to Chhattisgarh but he does not say anything about the water, forest, land. He only keeps on criticising the Congress government here. He makes false allegations of corruption against our government but the fact is that it is the BJP which indulges in corruption, not Congress," Kharge alleged.

"In Chhattisgarh, people's income has increased by 38 per cent. PM Modi should praise the Congress government for this but he only criticises us. Congress has lakhs of workers, hundreds of leaders, we run the party. But the Central government is run by only two people- PM Modi and Amit Shah," he added.

Kharge said party leader Rahul Gandhi met people from all walks of life during Bharat Jodo Yatra.

"He keeps on meeting people from various categories, including weaker sections. Recently, he did 'seva' in Golden Temple in Amritsar. In contrast, Modiji keeps even his ministers at an arm's length," he alleged.

Chhattisgarh is among five states that will go to the polls by the end of the year. The Congress government came to power in the state in 2018. (ANI)
