Himachal Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Rajiv Bindal on Thursday said that the new parliament building created a history by passing the Women's Reservation Bill.

"The new Parliament building has created history. The Women's Reservation Bill which has been in limbo for 27 years was cleared by the Lok Sabha by the 128th amendment in the constitution. There were 454 votes in favour of the bill, while two votes were against it. Years after, there is a consensus among the parties on a bill," Bindal told ANI.

"The issue of Women empowerment is related to faith and loyalty to the BJP. Prime Minister Modi has given a priceless gift to the women of the country. Congratulations to all the women! A history has been created with the passage of this bill", he added.

On Tuesday, the Lok Sabha passed the Women's Reservation Bill which provides for 33 per cent reservation for women in the lower house of the Parliament and state assemblies.

The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, was passed after a reply by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.

The Bill was passed following division with 454 members voting in favour of the legislation and two against it.

The bill was passed by a majority of the total membership of the House and by a majority of not less than two-thirds of the members of the House present and voting.

The government introduced the new bill on Tuesday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing the governments intention to bring 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam'.

In 2008, the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government tabled the Bill in the Rajya Sabha, and it was passed in 2010. However, the Bill was never taken up for consideration in the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, taking potshots at the opposition over the bill, Rajiv Bindal said, "The Congress party and other parties were lacking the willpower, that is why, the bill could not be passed earlier. The Congress did present the bill but stepped back".(ANI)
