Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Wednesday hit out at the Centre over the census and delimitation clause in the Women's Reservation Bill and said the hopes were built up only to be dashed in 24 hours because in the "Devil lies in the details."

"When it was known that the Women's Reservation Bill was being brought, the hopes were built up till there only to be dashed in 24 hours because in the Devil lies in the details.," SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal said in the Lok Sabha.

Questioning why it took the Centre 9.5 years to introduce the Bill in the House, Badal said, the details came out that the bill would come in after the census and delimitation take placeWhy did you take 9.5 years to bring the bill?

"In a House of 543 MPs, it takes 78 of us (women MPs) who have fought against thousands of men to eventually reach this House. These 78 women MPs here represent the voice, dreams, and challenges, of 70 crore women who look up to this house and to the government," SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal said.

SAD MP further said that only 14 per cent of women after 75 years in this house, 24 in the first Lok Sabha and 78 in the 17 Lok Sabha.

"Only 14 per cent of women after 75 years in this house, 24 in the first Lok Sabha and 78 in the 17 Lok Sabha. If you look at the rise it is barely 9 per cent in 75 years. It is shocking that 11 out of 13 MPs in this House are men," she said.

Today, there is no final date as to when women will get a 33 per cent reservation in this House. So what was the urgency to bring in the session," SAD MP added.

The Women's Reservation Bill that seeks to provide a 33 per cent quota for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies was introduced in the Lower House on Tuesday in the ongoing special session of Parliament

On Tuesday, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the bill in the first sitting of Lok Sabha in the new Parliament building. The bill has been named 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam'.

The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, seeks to introduce three new articles and one new clause in the Constitution. (ANI)
