Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday announced a short-term rent payment scheme and said that the state government has decided to provide Rs 5000 rent in Rural and Rs 10000 in Urban areas to affected families in relief camps, an official release said.

The Scheme will be in force till March 31, 2024.

"The rent admissible shall be Rs. 5000/- per month in rural areas and Rs. 10000/- per month in urban areas. The rent will be paid in direct benefit transfer (DBT) mode to the eldest female member of the family. The day the family moves to their own house/accommodation, the monthly rent will be stopped forthwith. In case the family is not able to find suitable accommodation, it may continue living in a relief camp. The family should be staying in the relief camp set up by the District Administration as of September 12, 2023. The definition of family for this purpose will be as per Parivar Register," the release said.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said "Due to large-scale devastation during the ongoing monsoon season in the State, a large number of temporary relief camps have been set up in many districts of the State. Many of these relief camps have been set up in make-shift accommodations and schools etc. Setting up relief camps in schools was affecting the education of the students. So, the Government has decided to provide fixed rent to the families staying in relief camps so that they can hire suitable accommodation."

Meanwhile, CM Sukhu said that for those who are relocated because of the rain-related incidents the rent for their accommodation will be paid by the government.

"We have told those living in temporary shelters that till they are relocated, the govt will pay for their rented accommodation. I have given instructions on this in today's meeting and the changes with respect to the rules will also be done," said the CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. (ANI)
