In first of its kind initiative, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) will phase out diesel autos running in the city and ply e-rickshaws in their place as a measure to make the city pollution-free, MCG officials said on Tuesday.

Additional Commissioner of MCG zone-4 Jaspreet Kaur said that a special meeting will be organised on Wednesday, as part of this unique initiative. This meeting will also be attended by the traffic officials and officers of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Gurugram.

"An interaction with e-rickshaw owners and drivers will be held in the meeting in order to make the city pollution- free, Municipal Corporation of Gurugram has decided to run an e-rickshaw in place of about 2,000 diesel autos in the first phase," Kaur said.

She said that the e-rickshaw owners will be provided with registration certificates within 72 hours by the RTA department. Along with this, a grant of Rs 30,000 will be given by the MCG to the e-rickshaw takers in place of a diesel auto through a concessionaire, provided that they have to get their e-rickshaw scrapped with the agency authorised by the government department.
