New Delhi [India], August 29: The choice of a home elevator is a huge issue for a family. Buyers tend to rely on information provided on company's website, brochures and certificates prior to their choice. Certificate presented by a company may also make buyers believe that the product has undergone the necessary procedures. However, doubts may arise regarding the type of certificate presented by a company. In case of Odyssey investigation, the doubt is related to the fact that the certificate is presented in terms of a management system, rather than in terms of the product itself. The investigation has revealed that the certificate in question is described as ISO management system certificate with a given organizational scope. Such a certificate does not in itself mean that any specific model of elevator has undergone independent tests and has been certified. The solution of such problems is associated with the provision of additional product information that can be verified by customers. Buyers should request product-specific documentation instead of certificates. It may include Declaration of Conformity, name of the legal manufacturer, name of the product model, the standard of assessment. Additional information regarding test results and assessment process may also be required. Manufacturing information is equally important. Customer should have the right to know whether the address presented in the list is a factory, an office, service centre or assembly site. Information about manufacturing location and product origin will make buyer's choice more accurate. The investigation has revealed issues of certification, manufacturing location and product origin for Odyssey and Brio Elevators. Odyssey presents its compliance with Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, European Norms EN 81 and CE requirements. The investigation indicates that customers are to request product-specific documents to check such claims. Furthermore, the investigation questions the authenticity of the Chennai location, presented by Odyssey as a manufacturing location. Product origin is another issue in question due to the descriptions indicating European engineering and imported European components, while Aresforti, public manufacturing organization associated with Odyssey, identifies itself in terms of Turkish home-lift solutions. BE360 model produced by Brio is questioned as regards its Italian and Indian positions. The information about manufacturing location is as important for the buyer as the product characteristics. The use of phrases such as European engineering, imported components, Italian elegance or Indian innovation may indicate various aspects of product history. However, they do not necessarily mean that the whole product is manufactured or assembled in Europe or Italy. The investigation proposes to rely on product documentation in order to identify product manufacturing location. Purchase orders, commercial invoice, bill of entry where appropriate, declarations of manufacturers, serial number documentation and country of origin documentation can clarify the issue. Visual similarity of products cannot prove that they were manufactured in one and the same place. Questions regarding premium home elevators are connected with customer's ability to verify product information prior to the purchase of it. The information about legal manufacturer, factory address, manufacturer's authorization, country of origin, components and product specific conformity documents is extremely important. In addition, customers may require test reports, installation drawings, information about safety systems, warranty and service responsibilities prior to payment of booking amount. Such verification does not imply the fact that the company is doing something illegal. It simply gives buyers a chance to get more information about the product they are buying.
