Guwahati | Sunday, Jun 24 2007 13:33:24 IST

The flood situation in the Brahmaputra basin improved a bit, though the Barak and its tributaries continued showing a rising trend. A Central Water Commission (CWC) bulletin said the Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level at two places in Dibrugarh and Jorhat and displayed a rising trend at both places. At Dibrugarh, the water was flowing at 105.22 mt against the danger level of 104.24 mt and at Neamatighat in Jorhat, the river was flowing at 85.32 mt, against the danger level of 85.04 mt. The Subansiri, Dikhow, Manas and Beki rivers were also swelling, the CWC bulletin said. Manas received rainfall of over 49 mm, while the Kopili river at Kampur station recorded 70.5 mm of rainfall till this morning. Barak, Kushiyara and Katakhal rivers were also swelling, the bulletin added.

The Kushiyara was flowing at 15.12 mt, against the danger level of 14.94 mt. It also recorded rainfall of 64.2 mm. A red alert had been sounded in the state on Tuesday as more than 15,000 people have been displaced in the first wave of flood this year. Army had also been kept in stand-by and BSF troops were pressed into rescue and relief operations. About 4,285 hectares of land have been submerged, including nearly 1,150 hectares of farmland, a statement issued by the state government said.
