Cell phone trash-talking saves man's life
Detroit | January 06, 2007 12:01:13 AM IST

A Detroit-area man who fell asleep in a dumpster did some trash-talking to 911 emergency operators when he realized he was in a moving garbage truck.

The unidentified 41-year-old man was scavenging for cans and bottles in suburban Oak Park last Thursday, when he fell asleep, the Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday.

Detective Lt. Mike Pousak said the man had not been drinking, and made the panicky call to 911 when he awoke to the rolling movement of the truck and the noise of the compactor firing up.

The battery to the man's cell phone fell out and was lost in the garbage, so police were forced to hunt down all the garbage trucks they could find. They pounded on the sides of the trucks until they found the one the man was in, and he was freed, covered in sawdust and dough, the newspaper said.

Pousak said the man was extremely lucky.

This man could have been crushed and no one would have known about it. It's really remarkable, he said.
