Why study MBBS in Russia?

Russia is one of the most popular destinations for Indian students to study MBBS, with more than 10,000 Indian students studying medicine in 40+ medical colleges in Russia. The country has a long history of providing quality medical education to students from all over the world. The Russian government has invested heavily in its education infrastructure, and medical education is no exception. The universities in Russia offer modern facilities and equipment, experienced faculty, and a curriculum that focuses on practical training, making it an ideal destination for those who want to pursue MBBS.

Benefits of studying MBBS in Russia

There are several benefits to studying MBBS in Russia.

  • Russia has a low cost of living compared to medical colleges in western countries, making it an affordable option for Indian students.
  • The medical universities in Russia are recognized globally, and the degree is accepted in several countries, including India.
  • The medical education system in Russia is based on practical training, which means that students get hands-on experience, making them more confident and competent doctors.

Overview of the medical education system in Russia

The medical education system in Russia is based on the Bologna Process, which means that it is in line with the European education system. MBBS in Russia is divided into two parts: the pre & para-clinical and clinical phase. The pre & para clinical phase is three years long, and it focuses on the theoretical aspects of medicine. The clinical phase is three years long, and it focuses on the practical aspects of medicine. It also matches with the requirement of NMC such as minimum 54 months of theory + 12 months of internship. The total duration of the course is 5.8 years including internship.

A crucial factor to consider when selecting a medical university in Russia is the language of instruction. Numerous institutions employ a bilingual teaching approach, with the initial three years conducted in English and the subsequent three years in Russian. Students must exercise caution in choosing universities and opt for top Russian medical colleges with fully English-taught programs to pursue their MBBS in Russia.

The admission process for MBBS in Russia is straightforward. Timely application is essential  because most of the preferred English taught courses close by 15th July. The universities generally issue admission letters in June & July.  Generally, the entrance exams are just for   formalities with basic language proficiency tests and most students clear it.  Except in a few universities such as Pirogov NRM in Moscow, the passing rates have been as low as 40%. Always remember to  have the passport issued by July else the departures can get delayed.

Eligibility criteria for Indian students to study MBBS in Russia

Indian students who want to study MBBS in Russia need to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • The student must have completed 17 years of age on or before 31st December of the year of admission.
  • The student must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as the main subjects.
  • The student must have scored at least 50% in PCB in their 10+2 exams.

Fees and scholarships for MBBS in Russia

The fees for studying MBBS in Russia vary from university to university. On average, the fees for Russian medical colleges range from $4000 to $8000 per year. Scholarships are available for international students in some universities. Students are advised to check with Moksh  for details on scholarships.

Accommodation and living expenses in Russia

The cost of living in Russia is highly affordable compared to other European countries. On average, students need to budget around $75 per month for accommodation. The living cost including food, local conveyance and other expenses costs $100 per month. Accordingly, a total of $1500 to $2000 is required to be spent per year towards living in Russia as a medical student.

Medical licensing exams and career prospects after MBBS in Russia

After completing MBBS in Russia, students need to take the licensing exam to practice medicine in India. The licensing exam to be conducted for 2023 is called the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). From 2024 onward, every medical graduate, passing from India or abroad will need to qualify the license exam namely National Exit Test (NExT). As per the latest rule of NMC, the student should clear NExT within 10 years of being inducted  into a medical course.

Career prospects after MBBS in Russia are excellent. Students can work in government hospitals, private hospitals, or start their own practice. Most students take the online coaching by Moksh Academy right from the first year to prepare for 19 subjects covered in the medical course in Russia. Moksh Academy has a passing ratio of almost 100% as compared to the current FMGE passing ratio of 20%.

Scams done to Indian students in Russia by education agents

Many students fall victim to admission scams, particularly through small education agents. These agents often create a package deal for the first year of study and collect the money either in India or through a counterpart in Russia. They inflate the tuition fees and have the students sign an agreement with the agent or contractor, rather than directly with the university for fee collection.

To avoid such scams, students should ensure that any legal agreement they sign with a consultant or agent specifies that the fees will be paid directly to the university and not to a third party. Unfortunately, many MBBS students in Russia have been scammed for years, and even the Indian Embassy is unable to support them as they often sign agreements in Russian with third parties.
