Popularly known as father of the DNA fingerprinting in the country, Dr Lalji Singh, the new Vice-Chancellor of the Banaras Hindu Unversity (BHU) today said he would just take Re 1 as token salary from the University during his three year term. My main agenda would be to revive the lost glory of the BHU besides paying back what the university has given me in my life, said Dr Singh, who is expected to take the new charge on August 11. The President of India had last night announced the name of Dr Lalji Singh as the new VC of the central BHU for a term of three years. Dr Singh, a native of Kalwari villae under Sikarara police station area of the district, told UNI here that he will take only Re 1 as a token salary from the BHU during his tenure. Presently I am also associated with a Bhatnagar fellowship for five-year term along with another scientist, he said. Dr Lalji Singh is the former director of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), located in Hyderabad, India. During his tenure the CCMB worked highly on the field of molecular basis of sex determination, DNA fingerprinting, wildlife conservation, silkworm genome analysis, human genome and ancient DNA studies.
