55 yr old DMK sympathiser immolates for Tamils cause

A 55 year-old sympathiser of the ruling DMK, today committed self-immolation espousing the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils in the southern Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu today.

Police sources said S Gokularathinam, who had worked in erstwhile Ceylon and later settled at Anaiyur in Sivakasi taluk, doused himself with kersone and set himself ablaze in front of the Virudhuangar helipad Maidan.

He was rushed to Virudhunagar General Hospital, where he was declared dead. A DMK sympathiser, Gokularathinam was holding a DMK flag when he took the extreme step. He was working as a labourer in a cracker manufacturing unit in Sivakasi. He was the seventh person to sacrifice his life for the cause of the Lankan Tamils in the state. Muthukumar in Chennai, Pallapatti Ravi in Dindugul, Sirkazhi Ravichandran at Mayiladuturai, Vannai Amaresan in Chennai, Tamizvendhan in Cuddalore and Sivapragasam of Chennai, had earlier committed self immolation.

Besides this, two Tamils, Stephen and Madhiraja, had committed self-immolation in Malaysia, and a Sri Lankan Tamil Murugadasan at Geneva.
