2 killed when tailgate hits windshield

A Canadian couple died in a freak crash in Ontario when a tailgate from a dump truck smashed through their windshield.

Two dump truck drivers were charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, The Richmond Hill Liberal reported. The driver of the truck directly involved in the fatal crash was also charged with two counts of criminal negligence resulting in death.

The man and woman, both 75 and both Toronto residents, were traveling north on Highway 400 Saturday afternoon in King Township, when a southbound dump truck hit the highway median barrier, Ontario Provincial Police said. The truck's tailgate became detached and flew into the air, landing on the northbound car.

The identities of the victims had not been released pending notification of their family.

The highway was closed for several hours after the crash.
