A pall of gloom descended in this city's playing arena with report of sad demise of East Bengal's ASEAN Cup winning midfielder Kalia Kulothungan in a motor bike accident at his home town in Tamil Nadu early today.
Forty-year-old Kalia Perumal Kulothungan while returning home by his mobike died ina fatal accident at Thanjavur around 02.00 hours, a report reaching here said.
Former midfielder and Tamil Nadu state captain Kalia Kulothungan during his stint in Kolkata had been immensely popular for his ball playing and endurance on field.
Born in Thanjavur the midfielder had a long and successful career in Kolkata and played for big three East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan Sporting and Bhawanipur.
Kulothungan began his football career with East Bengal, 20022005, then switched over Md Sporting 20052007, 20072009 with Mumbai F.C, 20092010 Mohun Bagan, 20102012 Viva Kerala and then 2012 at Bhawanipore F.C.
The midfielder had a long an successful career in the city, which included several titles as well.
Tributes for Kulonthungan poured on social media.
" We at Mohammedan Sporting Club deeply saddened to hear about the untimely demise of former midfielder Kalia Kulothungan. Remembering his wonderful and gentle soul will forever remain in our hearts. May he rest in peace," a twitter said.
Western India Football Association CEO Henry Menezes also took to Twitter to pay his respects to the former-East Bengal midfielder.
Henry Menezes said he was shocked to hear that Kalia Kulothungan the talented footballer from Tamilnadu played for EB and Mahindra United died in a road accident.
" Let us pray that the almighty gives strength to his family to bear this big loss"Kulothungan had a long and successful career in Tamil Nadu. He earned the respect of fans, as well as, his peers. Kulothungan was always there for the team when needed, helping East Bengal win back-to-back titles.
His former teammate at East Bengal Alvito D'cunha expressed shock by the news, "" It's a big loss for his family. He was a brilliant player at his prime. Subhash Bhowmick used to use him as a trump card. A player with a gifted first touch," he said.
"A few days back I was telling Nitu da ( EB official) that in the IFA Shield semi-final against the then Eveready he lifted us with a match-winning goal. A sad day indeed."EB and MB also mourned the early demise of the footballer.
