The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has filed a special petition in the Supreme Court, challenging the judgement of the Aurangabad bench of Mumbai High Court, imposing a permanent ban on dumping of garbage at Naregaon village in future.

The PIL was filed by Nareagon and surrounding villagers on ground of their health problems, including air and water pollution.

The villagers also requested the court to pay compensation to them, provide free treatment to the ailing persons and take action against those, who flouted the court orders.

Since last 32 years, AMC has been dumping garbage at Naregaon village. In 2003, the Aurangbad bench had directed the AMC to treat garbage, but it did not follow the court directive and continued dumping garbage there.

On Wednesday, AMC filed a special petition in the apex court, mentioning that the Principal Secretary of the state had already submitted an affidavit, with time-bound plan of treating garbage at Naregaon.

The petition also mentioned that as AMC was committed to treat garbage, it needs some time to start a waste treatment plant.

Through this petition, the AMC has requested the SC to grant permission for transporting garbage at Naregaon for treating.

The petition will come before the SC bench, comprising Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan, on March 19.
