The Puducherry Administration would celebrate November 1 as the Independence Day of Puducherry from this year and would declare the day as a holiday, Chief Minister N Rangasamy said here today.
Addressing the gathering at the Independence Day celebrations here, the Chief Minister said while celebrating August 16 as the 'De-Jure' (Transfer of power) day the administration as per the demands of the freedom fighters who strove for the liberation of Puducherry, a committee had been constituted to examine the records. As per the recommendations of the committee November 1 would be declared as the Independence Day of Puducherry and a public holiday would be declared for the day. (It may be noted that the French India Viduthalai Kaala Makkal Iyyakkam, a movement striving for the cause for the people who opted for Indian citizenship at the time of the merger of Puducherry with the Indian union, was organsing a series of agitations demanding that Novemebr 1 be declared as the Independence Day of Puducherry and August 16 as the Republic Day). Paying glowing tributes to the freedom fighters who obtained the freedom for the country, Mr Rangasamy exhorted the people to continue their support to his government to make Puducherry number one in all sectors.
