FDA Commissioner Mahesh Zagade, today said that consumer organisations and patients' groups must demand quality and safe medication to avoid diseases.
He said, 'we are victims of disease because of lack of awareness about hygiene, good pharmacy practices and access to safe drinking water. Consumer Organisations and Patients' Groups must demand quality and safe medication to ensure protection from adverse drug reaction and avoidable diseases.'
Zagade was inaugurating the celebration of World Health Day - 2014.
The Consumer Online Foundation along with other emminent Consumer Organisations in Mumbai celebrated the World Health day where he made this observation.
He stressed the need for building a strong partnership between the Government, consumer organisations and ethical business entities to bring transparency and accountability to public health services.
Zagade explained in detail on the recent publication regarding the doctor's obligation in prescribing cheaper generic medicines as per Maharashtra Model Prescription Format being contemplated by the Government of Maharashtra.
He also congratulated consumer organisations for joining the WHO campaign against vector-borne diseases in India in collaboration with the Government of India, National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, and the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
