Republic Day celebrated amidst bomb blasts in Manipur

: As Manipur Governor VK Duggal unfurled the tri colour to mark the beginning of the Republic Day celebrations at the historic Kangla here today two powerful bomb blasted at nearby Babupara and 1st Manipur Rifles parade ground. The first bomb blasted at the high security Babupara area where Chief Minister, O Ibobi, Cabinet ministers, Speaker live. State Police headquarter, DC office are also near the premises of the blast. Another blast occurred near the 1st Manipur Rifles parade ground where the participants of the Republic Day celebrations assemble and converge. Chief Minister, O Ibobi was scheduled to speak at the Parade ground after the end of the parade. No one was injured and police rushed in to take stock of the situation . Extraordinary security arrangements were taken up with security personnel almost lining up the entire stretch of the parade route from 1st Manipur Rifles to Kangla. The blasts did not however disturb the celebrations as the Governor unfurled the tricolour . N Herojit of IRB was the parade commander and about 100 contingents of Manipur Police, IRB, traffic, CRPF, students took part in the parade. A colourful display of cultural programme also marked the occasion. About 13 tableaux of different departments were also displayed.

The Governor also honoured 17 police personnel who were awarded medal for gallantry, Police Medal for Meritorious Service , President's Fire Service Medal for Meritorious Service . Correctional Service Medal for Meritorious Service were also given to three warders. This year two persons from Manipur will also be conferred the Padmashri , Elam Endira Devi in the field of Art Manipuri Dance and Dr. Waikhom Gojen Meitei, Literature and Education . After the participants assembled again at the Manipur rifles parade ground Chief Minister, O Ibobi spoke to the participants and thanked them for making the event a success. He said the nation is progressing and there has been an increase in pouring of fund in developmental related activities. Police thoroughly search those who came to witness the celebrations. Metal detectors were places at all entrances. Vehicles were not allowed to enter the Kangla area. The streets were however completely deserted as Coordinating Committee (Cor Com) the umbrella of the Manipur based outfits had called for boycott of the observation and general strike.

The general strike

began at 0100 hours and will end at 1700 hours. All inter and intra state passenger services were cancelled. The market was completely shut down. UNI NS RST13:17 NNNN
