New Delhi | Friday, Aug 10 2012 IST
The work on setting up two more nuclear reactors of 1,000 megawatt each at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu will begin during the 12th Plan(2012-17) even as the first two units of identical generation capacity are scheduled for commercial operation by October 2012 and June 2013, the government has informed Parliament. Completion of the first two units, also of 1000 megawatt each, have been delayed by five years due to anti-nuke protests. As against the original completion date of unit 1 and unit 2 in December 2007 and December 2008, the two units are expected to be completed in August 2012 and March 2013, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's office V Narayanasamy told Rajya Sabha in a written reply yesterday. he said unit 3 and unit 4 of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) would also be built with the Russian assistance like the earlier two units. In fact, a total of six reactors of 1,000 mw each would complete the nuclear project at Kudankulam. Mr Narayanasamy said an Inter-governmental agreement to set up 10 nuclear reactors of 1,000 mw each had been signed with Russia on December 5, 2008. While 4 additional units would be set up at Kudankulam, six would be built at Haripur in West Bengal, he added.
Besides delaying the commissioning of unit 1 and unit 2 of KKNPP, the anti-nuclear protests have also upped the cost of the project by over Rs 4,000 crore to Rs 17,270 crore from the original estimate of Rs 13,171 crore, sources said.
"A credit of Rs 6,416 crore has been advanced by the Russian Federation for the KKNPP Units 1&2," according to the Minister in the PMO. The project is being built by Nuclear Power Corporation of India in collaboration with Russia. He said the first and second units of Kudankulam project are scheduled to reach criticality (first start of fission chain reaction) in August 2012 and March 2013 and commence commercial operation by October 2012 and June 2013.
