Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), a pro-Tamil political party, today strongly condemned the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for its letter to the organizers of Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO) Conference, slated to be held at Chennai on August 12 to drop the word 'Eelam' from the title of the Conference. Talking to newsmen here, VCK President Thol Thirumavalavan said the MEA had sent a letter to the TESO Conference organizers to ban the word 'Eelam,' in the conference. The letter tantamounted to the emergency period that prevailed during the freedom struggle and it was not correct to ban the word Eelam from the conference, he said and urged the Centre to withdraw its order immediately.

In an official letter, dated August 9, 2012, to Hasan Mohammed Jinnah, Secretary of TESO Conference under the subject 'Political clearance for holding International Conference titled Eelam Tamil Rights Protection Conference on 12th August 2012 in Chennai,' R K Nagpal, Deputy Secretary (Coordiation), Ministry of External Affairs (Coordination Division), said 'this Ministry has no objection from political angle, for the proposed International Conference, with foreign participants, with the proviso that 'Eelam' may be dropped from the title of the Conference, and subject to clearance of Ministry of Home Affairs and other competent authorities." Already then Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had called on DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, who was to organise the conference and requested him to refrain from bringing up the Eelam (a separate Tamil land in Sri Lanka) demand at the TESO conference, prompting the DMK Chief to announce that the demand for Eelam will not be part of the agenda at the conference. Meanwhile, the letter sent by MEA irked the pro-Eelam activists and also raised questions like would the organizers of the TESO Conference succumb to the Centre's order?. UNI GSM AKM RSS1426 NNNN
