Supreme Court today issued notices to the Union Health Ministry and Medical Council of India (MCI) on a petition seeking an inquiry into the illegal drug trials in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. A bench comprising Justices R M Lodha and H L Gokhale issued notices after hearing counsel for the petitioner NGO Swasthya Adhikar Manch alleging that the trials are illegal and cannot be carried out on human beings. The illegal and inhuman practice was exposed during a sting operation carried out by a private news channel. The operation had showed how mentally ill patients were used as part of a drug trial. The apex court has sought the response of the respondents within two weeks and next date of hearing is March 12. UNI SC CS RP1925 NNNN
