MDMK General Secretary Vaiko today took exception to former Justice V R Krishna Iyer participating in a Human chain agitation organised by former Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan on the Mullaperiyar dam row. In a letter to Justice Krishna Iyer, copies of which were released to the media here, Mr Vaiko said having high regard for him, he was terribly shocked and pained to read that Mr Justice Iyer had participated in the human chain agitation. I am terribly shocked and pained to read the news in the press that you joined hands with Mr Achuthanandan, in a human chain with an ulterior motive to demolish the Mullaperiyar Dam, he noted. Kerala and Tamil Nadu were at loggerheads over the vexed Mullaperiyar dam issue, leading to rising tensions in the border areas of both the States. While Kerala was hellbent on demolishing the existing dam as it was weak and wanted to construct a new one, Tamil Nadu had been opposing it on the ground that the 116-year-old dam was very safe and was as good as a new one.
