The extravagantly decorated palace of the Maharaja of Mayurbhanj, a heritage building depicting the rarest engineering skill and architectural excellence of a bygone era, needs urgent conservation by the ASI, historians feel. The first phase of the Palace was built by Maharani Sumitra Dei Bhanj Deo, who ruled the state from 1796 to 1810 AD. In phased development, the Palace could get its aura of majesty with intricate designs during the rule of Maharaja Krushna Chandra Bhanj Deo (1868-1882), Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanj Deo(1882-1912) and finally during the rule of Pratap Chandra Bhanj Deo (1928-1948). Noted historian Professsor Dipak Kumar Sarangi demanded the deployment of an expert team from the Archaeological Society of India (ASI) to explore and suggest means to protect the palace. It was only the ASI which has the expertise to deal with the conservation of such heritage building, he said, adding that many cracks and fissures have developed on its walls and banyan trees were sprouting threatening the marvels of the priceless heritage. The only choice left for the upkeep of this heritage was to hand it over to the experts from the ASI, said Shyam Patnaik, Secretary of the Mayurbhanj Kalakar Sangha . The heritage palace, he said should be conserved by the ASI so that the posterity can see and feel how it used to be in their ancestors times. MORE UNI XC DP RH VK1755
