The police has arrested Telugu Film Producer Singanamala Ramesh on the charges of fraud, threatening and cheating.
He was arrested yesterday by Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials at Chennai airport, a police release issued said.
Singanamala, along with others, are accused in cases of fraud, intimidation and cheating, amounting to crores of rupees, CID Additional Director General of Police S V Ramana Murthy said.
The ADGP said Financier Jayanth Reddy has registered a complaint that Ramesh, along with Bhanu Kiran, the prime suspect in the Maddelacheruvu Suri, had threatened to kill him in 2008.
The first case pertains to fraud amounting to Rs 14.69 crore. The second case pertains to the video rights of the film Komaram Puli, in which he is alleged to have cheated the proprietor of Shalimar Videos of Rs 34.75 lakh. The 3rd case also involves cheating and misappropriation.
The ADGP said Singanamala Ramesh and his wife Vidyadhari had approached B Vaijayanthi Reddy and her husband Jayanth Reddy for financial assistance for film production business, claiming that he owned property in Poonjeri village, Mahabalipuram Road, Kanchipuram district.
He obtained a loan of Rs 7.62 crore from Reddy initially and another of Rs 10.50 crore subsequently. Singanmala repaid Rs 3.42 crore through registration of 3 flats in Hyderabad City but failed to repay the remaining amount of Rs 14.69 crore, excluding interest. After sometime, Reddy discovered that Singanamala was using the land near Mahabalipuram Road, Kanchipuram district to show as security to several other persons from whom he had taken loans. When she started pressing for repayment, Sinanamala called Reddy and her husband to Balaji Color Labs, Film Nagar, Hyderabad and introduced them to one Bhanu Kiran, who is said to have been right hand of Maddelacheruvu Suri and several other anti-social elements. Singanamala and Bhanu Kiran threatened them with physical harm if they did not forget about the money and filed a police complaint.
Singanamala, who was absconding since the date of offence, was arrested and questioned at Chennai by CID officials.
The accused will be produced before the local jurisdictional court in Chennai and will be brought to Hyderabad on transit warrant, it added.
