Couple commits suicide

A penury-ridden teacher and his wife allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in a private lodge near Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Terminus here today.
Police said the deceased were identified as M Kanagasabapathy (48), a Commerce teacher in a private higher secondary school at Nagamalai Pudukottai in Madurai district and his wife K Sankari (42). The couple checked into the lodge a couple of days ago and asked the staff not to disturb them as they were unwell. The hotel staff noticed a foul smell emanating from the room in which the couple were staying late last night. On information, police broke open the door and found the couple dead, early this morning. Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple were ridden with poverty, as they had borrowed huge debt from the usurers. Unable to bear the pressure mounted by the financiers from whom they had borrowed the money, the couple reportedly sold their ancestral house at Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli district, where Sankari and her daughter were living, and settled the debt. However, vexed over this, they allegedly committed suicide. The bodies were removed to Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) for an autopsy. Further investigations were on, police added.
