Senior RSS leader Thakur Ram Singh, a veteran RSS leader and President of Rashtriya Itihas Sankalan Samiti, passed away last night in Ludhiana.
He was 96 and remained an active RSS member till death.
In Shimla, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal expressed grief over the demise of Singh who passed away after a period of prolonged illness.
Singh headed the history rewriting wing of the RSS. The 96-year-old was a great RSS leader and a patriot who had contributed a lot towards strengthening the RSS bonds in the country, the Chief Minister said and added that in the death of Singh, he had lost a guide and a great philosopher and the vacuum created by his death was difficult to fill in. Mr Dhumal prayed for peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family members to bear the irreparable loss. The mortal remains of Singh were consigned to flames at a crematorium near his native Jhandhni village in this district of Himachal Pradesh this evening.
Kuldeep Thakur, son-in-law of Singh's elder sister, lit the pyre in presence of thousands of mourners amid inclement weather with a host of dignitaries, including the Chief Minister, former RSS chief S Sudarsan and BJP national vice-presidents Kalraj Mishra and Shanta Kumar. The district office bearers of the party were also present.
The body of Singh was kept at Neri Sansthan of RSS' history rewriting wing office where thousands of people prayed for the departed soul.
The body of the RSS veteran was earlier brought to Hamirpur from Ludhiana.
