One more person was arrested today in connection with the attack on New Man College professor T J Joseph.

Police said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) took Jamal(40) of Aluva into custody from Beemapally area in Thiruvananthapuram.

Sources said Jamal was learnt to have revealed that he was directly involved in attacking the teacher. He had also confessed that he used a big-knife to assault Professor Joseph.

A case under attempt to murder, conspiracy and unlawful activities was registered against Jamal, who was produced before Aluva Judicial First Class Magistrate (JFCM) Vidyadharan this evening as Moovatupuzha JFCM was on leave. He was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. Meanwhile, the SIT filed an application before the JFCM here seeking Police custody of Jamal.

SP P N Unnirajan, heading the investigation told newsmen that the trial of the teacher assault case would be conducted in the special court in Ernakulam where the NIA cases were also handled.

The accused was also booked for offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act which would enable NIA to take up the probe.

The NIA submitted to the High Court while considering a PIL on Thursday that investigation into the case could be taken over by NIA only if the crime came under the purview of the NIA Act.

Unnirajan said the SIT was seriously probing the involvement of state leaders of Popular Front of India in the teacher assault case. He said that the SIT was looking for five more accused who had directly taken part in the attack.
