Former Punjab minister Sukhjinder Singh passes away

A veteran Akali leader and Former Education Minister Sukhjinder Singh Khaira (80) died of cardiac arrest in a private hospital at Jalandhar early today.

Sukhjinder Singh's funeral will take place at his native village Ramgarh falling in Bholath Assembly constituency this afternoon.

The Former Education Minister joined politics after resigning from police service in 1971 from the post of DSP and was elected an MLA thrice from Bholath seat. He became Education Minister for two terms and resigned from the cabinet in 1986 in protest against the 'Operation Black Thunder'.

He left politics in 1992 on the issue of boycott of Assembly elections by Akali leaders following differences with the then Akali Dal President Parkash Singh Badal. He spent more than ten years in jails during Akali agitations .

Sukhjinder Singh is survived by his wife, son Sukhpal Khaira, Bholath congress MLA and district congress committee President and six daughters. One of his sons-in-law Ranjit Singh is a Justice of Punjab and Haryana High court.

A large number of people started visiting the residence of Sukhjinder Singh to mourn the respected leader of Bhoalth area.
