Foundation stone for bridge over river Mechhi laid Kishanganj | Friday, Feb 5 2010 IST
The foundation stone of a bridge over river Mechhi near Bhadrapur in Nepal across Galgalia in Kishanganj district has been laid by Deputy Prime Minister of Nepal Vijay Kumar Gachhedar. ''The 500-metre long RCC bridge, the foundation stone of which was laid yesterday, will be completed in three years. It will entail 37 crore Nepalese currency,'' the Secretary of Ministry of Physical Planning, Government of Nepal, Purn Kataria, told UNI over phone today. The bridge, which would connect the two neighbouring countries, is being built by the Nepal Government. The approach road on Bihar side will be constructed by the Union government. Nepal Tourism Minister Saurav Bhandari and a host of MPs from that country were present at the foundation stone laying ceremony. Former Union Minister of State (MOS) Taslimuddin, and Indo-Nepal Friendship Sangh chief Tarachand Dhanuka were also present on the occasion. Six Nepali citizens and members of Bharat-Nepal Maitri Sangh (Indo-Nepal Friendship Sangh) namely Om Prakash Saraogi, Mohan Lal Agrawal,Divya Bhurtel, Shiva Bhurtel, Manohar Bhandari and Bhartendu Mallick and from Indian side Tarachand Dhanuka were honoured for campaigning for the construction of the bridge. The river Mechhi flows along the Bihar-Nepal border. Indo-Nepal Friendship Sangh chief Tarachand Dhanuka said it was a historic day and they have been fighting for a bridge across Mechhi for long five decades.
