Rajam Iyer dead

Eminent Carnatic Vocalist, Padma Bushan B Rajam Iyer, died here today after brief illness.

Born in 1922 in Sivaganga District of Tamil Nadu, Mr Iyer learnt music from Karaikudi Ganapathy Aiyar, Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar and T L Venkatarama Iyer in his early days.

The 87-year-old Mr Iyer had won many awards before the Union Government honoured him with the prestigious Padma Bushan Award.

Among others, he won the Sangeeth Natak Academy and Sangeeth Kalanidhi Awards. He also served as professor in Tamil Nadu Music College.

He had also served as the "Top Grade Artiste" of All India Radio.
