After playing cricket for India and dabbling in acting, Vinod Kambli today announced the beginning of a new innings in politics by joining the Lok Bharati party of MLC Kapil Patil today.

Speaking to mediapersons here, Kambli said it was his decision to join the party and he had not sought the advice of his best friend Sachin Tendulkar, whose advice he always sought.

He, however, expressed optimism that Sachin would support him in this endeavour and support the Lok Bharati Party.

Kambli was non-committal about contesting the elections, saying that this is a new innings. Let me read the pitch first, see what is there in the wicket and then I will let you know.

The former southpaw also announced the plans of setting up of a Khel Bharati sports academy, which would cater to not just cricket but a variety of sports disciplines.

He said he and his team would travel to the villages and pick up talent from among the underprivileged and give them all the training facilities so that they could go on and represent India one day.

When asked where the academy would be based, Kambli said ''We will inform you soon about the place where we would set up the academy. We have shortlisted a few places and we would soon be finalising one of these places.'' On the reasons for joining the Lok Bharati Party, Kambli said he had got offers from bigger parties, but he chose Lok Bharati because he had seen their work and was confident about this party delivering the type of governance that people wanted. ''Post 26/11, people wanted change and a new direction. I was also shocked by the events that took place on that day. After seeing the work of Lok Bharati, I was confident that it will be able to give the desired change.'' Kambli added that he would be concentrating on education and sports, as the country at this moment was lagging behind in these two things.
