Lakhiram Agrawal cremated with state honours

Former Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh BJP President and ex-Rajya Sabha MP Lakhiram Agrawal was cremated with full states honours here today.
Agrawal, 78, passed away at Apollo hospital here last night. He was ailing for the past few years. He is survived by five sons, one daughter and grandchildren. His son Amar Agrawal is the Chhattisgarh Health Minister.
His elder son Brijmohan Agrawal lit the funeral pyre. The funeral procession started from his home at his native hometown Kharsia in Raigarh. Political leaders from various parties, including the BJP, and cabinet ministers were present for the funeral.
Chief Minister Raman Singh, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kailash Joshi and other senior party leaders, including Mr Vikram Verma and Ms Sumitra Mahajan arrived here for paying tributes.
Agrawal served as Rajya Sabha member from 1990 to 2002. He was also state BJP unit President of undivided Madhya Pradesh from 1990 to 2000. After bifurcation of Madhya Pradesh, he became Chhattisgarh BJP President.
Born on February 13, 1932, in Kharsia, Agrawal became active in politics in 1960.
He served as Kharsia municipality chairman, Madhya Pradesh State Marketing Association and district cooperative bank chairman. He was a MISA detainee in 1975 during Emergency. He became Madhya Pradesh BJP General Secretary in 1983.
