The Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to invest Rs 200 crore to upgrade the Shillong airport and make the Baljek airport operational, an AAI official said. The AAI decision to upgrade Umroi and make the Baljek operational was on priority basis as road traffic to Meghalaya through Asom was frequently disrupted due to law and order problems.
Chief Minister D D Lapang said AAI officials, visited the Baljek airport site in West Garo Hills district and conducted an overall assessment of the progress of construction work in the airport. He said the officials of the AAI will visit the state to discuss the ways and means to expand the runway at Umroi airport in Ri-Bhoi district.
AAI officials said once the Umroi airport is upgraded, AAI will allow Boeing 737-class of aircraft to land.
Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee accompanied with AAI and state Transport department officials inspected the non-operational Baljek airport. Mr Chatterjee asked the officials concerned to write to the Chairman of AAI for surveys of land for extension of the 3,300 feet runway at Baljek airport by another 12 feet for 50-seater aircraft to land.
