Mor Severios Kuriakose elevated as Archbishop

Patriarch Mor Ignatius Zakka I has elevated the Malankara Syrian Knanaya diocese as Archdiocese and its Metropolitan Mor Severios Kuriakose as Archbishop and Chief Metropolitan of the Church.
At a news conference here today, Metropolitan Mor Severios Kuriakose said the elevation ceremony would be held later.
The Archdiocese status was in recognition of the peculiarities, tradition and universal jurisdiction of the Church. There were 103 parishes, 117 priests and one lakh-odd members in the Church.
Mor Severios Kuriakose was ordained Ramban by Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I on January 12, 2004 following the demise of Metropolitan Mor Clemis Abraham and three days later he was consecrated as Metropolitan at the St Peter and St Paul’s cathedral in the monastery of St Ephraim at Ma’arrat Seydnaya, Damascus, Syria.
He is the fourth Metropolitan of the 96-year-old Church. The Knanaya community came to Malankara in AD 345 under the leadership of Knai Thoma. The Syrian Knanaya diocese was formed in 1910.
Geevargheese Mor Severios was the first Metropolitan of the Church.
Ramban ordination of the Auxiliary Metropolitan-elect Fr C T Kurian of the Church will be held at a function at Kallisserry St Mary’s church on January 21 and Metropolitan consecration at Damascus on February 2, the Archbishop said.
