The Shiromani Akali Dal(Longowal) led by Prem Singh Chandumajra merged with the Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) led by Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday in Chandigarh.

The announcement was made by both Chandumajra and Badal at a joint news conference.

Badal and Sukhbir Singh Badal welcomed Chandumajra into the SAD and gave assurances that they would accord him both respect and recognition.

Badal appealed again to other Akali factions to join the SAD in the larger interests of Punjab. He confirmed that he had asked Chandumajra to contest from the Lehragaga seat against Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, the state's Deputy Chief Minister. He said Baldev Singh Mann has been offered the Dirba seat in Sangrur District.

"Today is a historical day for the Shiromani Akali Dal. I have said before also in a press conference that to defeat the Congress, any individual party that wants to merge with us is welcome," said Badal.

Chandumajra said that he had merged his party with the SAD unconditionally and was happy to return to the mainstream of Punjab politics. He said that the main aim of both parties was to defeat the Congress.

Replying to questions relating to his earlier departure from the SAD, Chandumajra said that he was forced out, and now Badal had invited him back. There was nothing unusual about it, he added. (ANI)
