Drinking liquor at any religious place can trigger a brawl or leave devotees with frowned eyebrows. But at the shrine of a Sufi saint Baba Rodu Shah in village Kaunke Kalan near Jagraon, you can enjoy alcohol as prasad.

On the death anniversary of Baba Rodu Shah, a large number of devotees thronged Kaunke Kalan village on Wednesday to participate in the three-day long annual fair to pay their respect. It is a long held belief that offering liquor besides other items brings good luck to the devotee.

Located around 8 kilometres from Jagraon, the shrine is visited by people of all faiths to pay their homage to the Sufi saint.

In addition to other items like flowers, incense and sweets, liquor is first offered by devotees to the photograph of Baba Rodu Shah and then they receive it back as prasad. It is believed that by offering liquor all wishes would get fulfilled.

"All wishes are fulfilled here. Devotees offer different items that may be sweet or salty but the main offering is liquor. After the prayer, different varieties of liquor are mixed together and is distributed among the devotees as Prasad," said Pritam Singh Billu, Chief Caretaker of Baba Rodu Shah Dargah.

Once the prayer of Saint is over, a part of the offered liquor is poured into a big vessel and distributed among devotees.

The fair commenced on September 4 (Monday) and concluded on September 6 (Wednesday). (ANI)
