Five Haryana doctors jailed for offering foetal sex tests

A local court here Wednesday awarded three-year rigorous imprisonment each to five Haryana doctors for illegally offering prenatal sex selection services to pregnant women.
The accused were identified as J.L. Mahajan, M.S. Talekar, D.B. Lal, P.B. Lal and K.K. Saraswat. They worked as private practitioners in Palam Vihar area of Gurgaon, the satellite town of the national capital in Haryana.
Besides the jail term, the court has also slapped a fine of Rs.1,000 on each of them. They were held guilty under Section 23 of the Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation & Prevention of Misuse) Act of 1994.
The accused doctors were offering prenatal sex selection services to parents who wanted male offspring and were charging huge fees from them. They were running this illegal business from a private hospital named Albega Hospital, said a police officer here.
A three-month pregnant woman was sent to the hospital as a decoy customer. Following this, the hospital was raided by a team of government doctors on Jan 30, 2002, he added.
Haryana has one of the lowest male-female ratios in the country.
