Police have shot a knife-wielding man after three people were stabbed in Melbourne's Bourke Street on Friday.

One person was confirmed dead , and two others were injured after a knife-wielding man went on a rampage at Bourke Street in Central Melbourne before setting a car ablaze, ABC News reported Superintendent of Police David Clayton said, "The officers were initially called in over reports of a fire, but when they arrived and got out of the car, they were "confronted by a male brandishing a knife and threatening them".

"Police shot the male in the chest and he is now in a critical condition in hospital".

The unnamed attacker is in "critical condition" at the hospital following the incident, which left one of the victims dead, he added.

It is reported that a man burned a car before starting his knife attack. Some witnesses claim they saw a car driving at high speed and crashing after missing a tram. Others reportedly saw the suspected driver getting out of the car and throwing "something like a bomb" inside before it caught fire. Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews tweeted "Thank you to the @VictoriaPolice officers who responded so bravely, and the every day Victorians who came to the aid of complete strangers. Please continue to avoid the area. Anyone with information should attend Melbourne West Police Station to make a statement".

Victoria Police have further claimed that there was no known link to terrorism.

The incident comes as a trial into the 2017 rampage in Bourke Street continues. In 2017, six people died in the terrifying car rampage that also left dozens injured.

In September that year a knife-wielding man also went on a rampage outside Flinders St station. In December, there was another incident when Saeed Noori allegedly drove a car into people crossing the intersection of Flinders and Elizabeth streets.
