The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the extension of President's Rule in Jammu and Kashmir for six months from July 3.

The present term of President's Rule in J&K will expire on July 2 and the state's Governor Satya Pal Malik has recommended that the President's Rule in the state may be extended for a further period of six months.

Governor's Rule was imposed in the state on June 20, 2018 and the Assembly, which was initially kept in suspended animation, was dissolved on November 11 last year.

The Election Commission has said that it may hold Assembly polls in the state later this year and that the dates will be announced after the Amarnath Yatra.
