Separatists have called for a strike on Friday against the killing of two militants, including PhD scholar-turned-militant Mannan Wani, in an encounter with security forces on Thursday in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara.

The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yaseen Malik, urged people to observe a complete strike on Friday to pay homage to the militants.

"Alas! heard the tragic news of #MananWani's Martyrdom and of his associates! Deeply pained that we lost a budding intellectual and writer like him, fighting for the of cause of self-determination. JRL appeals to people to observe a complete #Shutdown tomorrow to pay homage to him," Mirwaiz wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.

Wani was among two militants killed in a fierce encounter that ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) launched by security forces in Kupwara on Thursday.
