The Army on Thursday paid rich tribute to a soldier, who was martyred in an encounter with militants in the woods in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara.

Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia told UNI that Paratrooper (Ptr) Mukut Bihari Meena, who made the supreme sacrifice during counter militancy operations on Wednesday in Kupwara, was paid a befitting tribute by the Army in a solemn ceremony at Badami Bagh Cantonment.

"Lt Gen AK Bhatt, Chinar Corps Commander and all ranks, paid homage to the martyr on behalf of a proud nation," he said, adding representatives from other security agencies also joined in paying their last respects to the martyr.

He said Ptr Meena sustained bullet injury during the fierce operation at Menganwar in Kandi forests of Kupwara district. "The injured was provided immediate first aid and evacuated to the Hospital, but unfortunately succumbed," he said, adding one militant was also killed in the encounter.

Col Kalia said the 24-year-old martyr had joined the Army in 2011. He belonged to Village Ladaniya of Khanpur Tehsil in Jhalawar District, Rajasthan and is survived by his wife and parents.

He said the mortal remains of the martyr were flown for last rites to his native place, where he would be laid to rest with full military honours. In this hour of grief, he said the Army stands in solidarity with the bereaved family of the martyr and remains committed to their dignity and well being.
