Senior Congress leader M K Raghavan, MP on Thursday began a 24-hour hunger strike demanding reintroduction wide body (E Code) aircraft and Haj embarkation point at Calicut International Airport near here.

The hunger strike at Kidson Corner near the historic Sweet Meat Street was inaugurated by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) General Secretary P K Kunhalikutty, MP.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Raghavan, representing Kozhikode in the Lok Sabha, said by denyng bigger aircraft operations from the Airport, the Centre was denigrating the interest of the Pravasis who contributed immensely to the exchequer of the country.

Mr Kunhalikutty said the agitation was launched as the Calicut was a common men's Airport which was ignored by the authorities.

He said the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders would meet the Chairman of the Airport Authority of India (AA) during his visit to Karippur to press their demands.

The agitation would be intensified by shifting the venue to Calicut airport at Karippur near here if their demands were not met, the leaders added.
