The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been selected as the first 'Lighthouse City' for Urban Mobility Lab in the city.
Pune will be the first city to host India's Urban Mobility Lab, a programme that supports development and implementation of mobility solutions for Indian cities during a multi day workshop in August.
The civic body was selected as part of an initiative launched by NITI Aayog and the Rocky Mountain Institute, with the aim to establish Lighthouse Cities in India as world leading examples for integrated mobility solutions.
The project would focus on understanding the common challenges and opportunities in urban mobility across Indian cities, launch integrated pilot projects that demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of shared, clean, connected mobility in Lighthouse cities, along with scaling up validated solutions for other cities and sharing the lessons learned.
Pune, along with five other cities, was a finalist to be thefirst Lighthouse City. The six cities comprise the first cohort to be invited to participate in the Urban Mobility Lab, either as a Lighthouse City or a Scaling Partner.
The mobility system is complex and made up of many different segments, and designing with the whole system in mind for example, thinking about the intersection of public transitnon motorized transit, and shared vehicles will result in a solution that is more efficient and cost effective than improvements for each of thesesegments developed in isolation,' said in a statement.
