The Lok Gathbandhan Party on Tuesday slammed the Uttar Pradesh police for turning trigger-happy in the name of controlling law and order.

The party said the circulation of an audio clip of an SHO in Jhansi to strike a deal with gangster to protect him from encounter has badly exposed the prevailing situation in the police. The party said it has also indicated that fake encounters are being done to appease the political leadership in the state.

The spokesperson of the party said on Tuesday that wrapped as encounter in the cover, the UP police, which appears to have got licence from the state government to kill criminals, has also been settling personal scores.

He said in Jhansi case, the accused SHO is also involved in other criminal activities, which indicate that the UP police, under political patronage, are running amok. He recalled that in February, Noida police had staged a fake encounter, killing an innocent youth in that.

He said the police are on a spree of killing criminals as during the last ten months there have been 1,142 encounters in the state. "LGP is not opposed to elimination of hardened criminals who have become a menace in the society but the way UP police has been behaving, is disturbing and dubious," he said.

The spokesperson said in the past there had been cases when the police helped one criminal group to settle score with the other. Emphasising that the law should be allowed to take its course in controlling crime, he said the cops can not be given free hand to randomly kill people. The LGP said the government will have to review its strategy in crime control as encounters it will not help in controlling crime but lead to police anarchy.

The LGP said the BJP's slogan of ''bullet for bullet'' in controlling crime has been badly exposed as people are quite worried about the prevailing situation. Criticising the government for its utter failure in improving law and order the party said despite tall claims on the issue the ground realities are absolutely different. The spokesperson said the BJP had come to power on issues of worst crime situation during SP government, bad governance and massive corruption but it too has failed in making any change in this connection.
