The Thane city police on Tuesday claimed to have detected theft of as many as 21 two-wheelers from Ghatkopar, Kalyan and Bhiwandi and arrested four people in connection with the crime, while another two from Kalyan are at large.
DCP Bhiwandi Zone Sunil Bharadwaj said that the main player in the crime Ayazali Rehmat Ali Ansari, 32, a resident of Piranipada of the powerloom town, is also among the arrested.
A team of police personnel of the crime unit of Bhiwandi led by Ramrao Dikle spotted the accused in the town with a two-wheeler and upon inquiry they came to know that he had stolen the vehicle from some other locations.
He was into stealing the two-wheelers from different places and selling it off to the needy the police said.
A close interrogation of the arrested during the entire week revealed that he had stolen several two-wheelers in the recent past and with the help of two other accused Javed Shaikh, and Abdul Sattar sold it to the needy. The police reached those who had purchased the vehicles from the accused and their names were given as Vikki Goud, 25, Mohammad Akhtar Ansari, 29, and Abdul Nazid Mohammad Shabbir Ansari 29.
The accused used to steal the two-wheelers and remove the number plate and sell off the vehicle to the clients with a blank number plate.
The police have registered an offence under section 379 of the IPC with the Shanti Nagar police station of Bhiwandi division and further probe into the crime was underway.
The police during interrogation of the arrested recovered as many as 21 motor cycles which were stolen from the limits various police stations and 12 have been identified as being from Ghatkopar (2), Kalyan(4) and Bhiwandi (6) the police said. The total value of the seizure of the 21 two-wheelers is Rs. 6.72 lakhs the police said.
