IGL, Mahindra join hands to address stubble burning issue

CNG distribution company Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) and Mahindra Waste to Energy Solutions Limited (MWTESL) on Monday joined hands to provide a solution to stubble burning issue in north India.

For this, MWTESL, a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IGL here to provide a solution to Waste Management and stubble burning through design and development of bio-gas plants.

These bio-gas plants will use agro and other organic waste in Delhi and other cities in the region where IGL operates. IGL currently supplies CNG and PNG to Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Rewari with plans to start operations in Gurugram and Karnal shortly.

The MoU was signed by Mr. V. Nagarajan, Director (Commercial), IGL and Mr. P. Palaniappan of Mahindra Waste to Energy Solutions Ltd. in the presence of Mr. E.S. Ranganathan, Managing Director, IGL and other senior officials of IGL and MWTESL.

Stubble burning not only affects soil fertility as it results in loss of essential nutrients but also affects human health. The project aims to convert paddy and wheat straw into bio-CNG. In addition to alleviating the ill effects of stubble burning on the environment, this project will also add to the income of the farmers in the region.

The plant is proposed to be developed with state-of-the-art technology provided by Mahindra and will aim to resolve the woes of waste management which is a huge problem for the country.

Commenting on the development, IGL MD Mr. E.S. Ranganathan said, "Environmental pollution is the biggest concern in the region today and it is our endeavour to reduce alarming levels of pollution apart from creating opportunities for additional income for farmers".

Further, the Bio-CNG generated can be used to power vehicles and for electrifying farm and household appliances. The manure generated as a by-product can be used as organic fertilizer for farm cultivation by farmers which will help improve soil fertility as it will negate the requirement of chemical fertilisers.
