Senior Urdu journalist Saher Jalgavi passed away

Senior Urdu journalist Mohhammed Yakub Shaikh, alias Saher Jalgavi, passed away at his residence here last evening.

He was 84. Jalgavi was the Editor of Urdu daily newspaper "Kataib".

He had started his Urdu newspaper in 1966. Later, he started the paper in other two languages -- Hindi and Marathi with same title and same name. He was the senior most Urdu journalist of Maharashtra. Jalgavi had made several efforts to promote Urdu language in the country.

He is survived by his son and two daughters.

He ha penned numbers of books in Urdu and he was also a poet. For promoting the Urdu Language in the country, former President K R Narayan, former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and ex-Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had honored him on various occasion, said his son Julfikar Saher, who is also a journalist.
