''Padmaavat'' row: Contempt petitions filed in SC, hearing on Monday

Two contempt petitions were filed in the Supreme Court on Thursday against three members of Karni Sena and four state DGPs for allegedly violating the apex court''s order and disrupting law and order in connection with the screening of Hindi film ''Padmaavat''.

The apex court would now hear the matter on January 29, Monday. The Supreme Court had in its earlier order refused to modify its order and asked the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh governments to screen the movie in its respective theaters in their states and asked them to maintain law and order situation.

The three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said, ''''We would hear it on Monday''''.

One contempt petition was filed by Tehseen Poonawala against four states'' DGPs for allegedly violating the Supreme Court''s order and disrupting law and order.

He claimed in his petition, that four states had failed in its duty to maintain law and order in this regard.

Thereby, Poonawala sought the apex court''s direction to initiate contempt proceedings against those involved in maintaining law and order situation.

The second contempt petition was filed by Vineet Dhanda, seeking to initiate contempt proceedings against the three members of Karni Sena for allegedly violating the apex court''s order.

Dr Jaiprakash Dhanda, lawyer appearing for Vineet, claimed in its petition to initiate the contempt proceedings against three members of Karni Sena - - Lokendra Singh Kalvi, Sooraj Pal and Karan Singh - - for their alleged act of disobeying the apex court''s order.
