Security forces averted a major tragedy when they detected and defused a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by militants in the city outskirts on Srinagar-Baramulla road on Saturday, when separatists had called for a general strike against the killing of civilians in the valley.Traffic on the Srinagar to north Kashmir highway has been now been restored after remaining suspended for several hours as a precautionary measure following detection of IED.Official sources, told UNI that a Road Opening Party (ROP) of security forces noticed an IED planted by militants on main road in the city outskirts. The area was immediately sealed and traffic suspended as a precautionary measure. Sniffer dogs were also pressed into service.Since, it was early in the morning besides strike called by separatists, not much traffic was on the road, they said adding traffic has been diverted through Zainakote. The BDS defused the IED and traffic on Srinagar-Baramulla highway has been restored now. However, additional security forces and state police personnel remained deployed on the highway to prevent any stone pelting in view of the strike call, they said.Local residents told UNI over phone that there was a loud blast, sound of which was heard in the area when BDS defused the IED.UNI BAS AKC1144
